Topic of todays post stood rather clear to me, when I wrote the post about the McKinsey report yesterday. ‘Lions on the Move’ is basically a macro view of the African market growing steadily day by day, becoming an extremely lucrative objective seen from a business perspective. But the macro view on year 2020 can be somewhat hard to relate to, so it would be interesting to know which steps are being taken today… hence todays post lets a little air out of the balloon, focusing on services that serve Africa every single day.

I use quite some time weekly, searching for new opportunities for MYC4 (sites, organizations, people, partners, channels, media, etc.) and I often bump into a lot of interesting opportunities. I have chosen to give you a snippet of some of what I meet, so below are some techie solutions that are being used daily and that all have a vast scaling potential (the latter is crucial in my objective!!):
Afrigadget: This is probably one of my favorite sites as to ‘Innovation’ and ‘Africa’; here you will experience Africans using what they have at their hands and add large portions of creativity to come up with solutions ‘to overcome life’s challenges’.
Ushahidi: Ushahidi builds tools for democratizing information, increasing transparency and lowering the barriers for individuals to share their stories. I heard an example some time back where Ushahidi could predict faster than the official Richter Scale where an epic center of an earthquake was located – imagine what this kind of tools can be used for!!
M-PESA (and other Mobile Banking systems): M-PESA is an innovative mobile transfer solution that enables customers to transfer money. No traditional bank account is needed! I believe that this is Mobile Banking that the developed world has never experienced (only talked about). Competition in this space is raising (Ushindi Mobile, ZAP and Orange Money) and several game changers occur such as cross-border Mobile Money Transfer Service.
As mentioned, this is just a snippet of the stuff that I follow… please let the blog comments float with sites, organizations, people, partners, channels, media, etc. that I have yet not spotted and that should be on my ‘radar of opportunities’!
